Scalability matters
Kevin Burton over at Feed Blog has some great thoughts regarding scalability for web 2.0 companies in response to Om Maliks quote:
I think most start-ups actually don’t take that into account, and pay the price as they grow really big really fast. Early hiccups at TypePad were a case in point. Having had the financial resources, Six Apart has largely overcome those problems. Others, are not thinking along those lines, because we are in the early stages of what might be a bubble…
Couldn’t agree more. With few entry barriers, proper infrastucture is probably the first thing where savings are made when new “web 2.0″ businesses are bootstrapped. Open-source software, designed for mad scalability (and redundancy!), is one of the areas I’d like to see improve.
